U.S. Senator Kamala Harris of California has made history recently after Former Vice President Joe Biden chose her to be his running mate in the 2020 Presidential Election. There has never been a black woman or an Asian American woman on a major party ticket in a presidential election. Her father was from Jamaica an her mother from India. Whether she wins or loses the election, Kamala has already made history. African Americans and South Asian Americans look at her and see new possibilities for themselves.
Kamala has undoubtedly earned her nomination. Upon graduation from law school, she became a federal prosecutor and was later elected to be Attorney General of California. She ran for and won the election in 2016 to become a senator from California. In each instance, was the first African-American and Asian American in the elective offices. If the Biden Harris ticket wins in 2020, she will be the first African American and Asian American to be Vice President of the United States.
Role models are essential for young people. If Kamala does become Vice President, it could change the entire culture of the United States forever. Women and minorities might feel more motivated to fight for their dreams without feeling cynical about the opportunities available to them. We’ll have to wait and see what happens in November 2020 because it will impact the future of America for generations to come.
